CHAPTER 5

Gabriella had learned long ago that besting the male of the species felt damn good. She made no bones about how much she enjoyed beating her brothers—at anything—and considered herself a fairly good sport when they defeated her in return. She’d seen Knox eyeing the motorcycle when they’d pulled into the garage, and it wasn’t a major leap to getting left behind the moment he could make a break for it.

She just never expected the victory to feel quite as visceral—and shockingly sexual—as it did staring down those sky-blue eyes.

“Hand them over.”

“I might be risking the wrath of my family by helping you, but there is no freaking way you’re taking my grandmother’s hog.”

“Your grandmother? That motorcycle belongs to her?”

“It’s her house, isn’t it?”

“Yes, but—”

She fought back the smile and instead jangled the keys with a taunting jingle. “It’s her pride and joy. And while she might not live here full time, she rides when she’s home.”

At the sheer shock that painted his face, she fought back another shot of pleasure. That would show him to think twice about making assumptions. About her or just how good she was.

The T-shirt ploy was as obvious as the kiss gambit, and she cursed herself for the knees that still shook from his mind-numbing lips. The man was lethally sexual, and no matter how many different ways she told herself to stay away, she couldn’t stop dancing near his flame.

But none of it erased her personal victory with the keys.

“You’re not a part of this. Hand them over, and I’ll replace your grandmother’s ride as soon as I’m able.”

“Nope.” She shoved the keys into her jeans pocket. While she enjoyed her victory, waving it in his face was tantamount to taunting a charging bull. She’d place her body between him and the keys and let the odds roll however they may.

“Gabriella. You’re better off without me here. I shouldn’t have come to your shop, and I’m sorry for that. Now it’s time to correct that foolish action. Hand over the keys. I promise you, I will replace the bike.”

Her stomach muscles tightened at the delicious sound of her name on his lips. She’d been Gabby or Gabs or even Rella to her small nieces, but very few used Gabriella. The syllables seemed to roll off his tongue with all the smoothness of velvet, and she couldn’t deny how sexy it made her feel.

Which was dumb.

She was as estúpida as she’d accused him of being a short time earlier. Worse, if she were honest with herself. He was only attempting to repair a wound, whereas she seemed diligently focused on wrecking the world she’d built around herself.

He was a highly trained professional, comfortable with a gun and the seamier side of life. She catered parties and taught wine-tasting classes. Besides teaching kindergarten, she wasn’t sure she could have found two lives further apart on a spectrum of danger, deception and risk.

Even the way he looked screamed lethal weapon. His cargo pants and thickly booted feet telegraphed his comfort with combat.
